MarHar Snowboards

Michigan Made!

rarely moved simply from the sheer enthusiasm and dedication to the

pursuit of not only producing a good or service but to instill a sense of pride in their customers as well. MarHar snowboards is one such

company that thoroughly impressed me when I was fortunate enough to sit and learn about both their struggles as well as their achievements. MarHar snowboards truly embodies the spirit of Michigan in not only their quality products but their processes, culture, and pride in their company. Established by West Michigan natives Josh Skiles and Nathan Morse in 2008, they have faced their fair share of struggles as well as successes, much like most of the current Michigan economy. A company whose name even originated from a family quote they have ensured that in all things they do it exudes a sense of pride and original style. Over the last several years they have persevered by staying true to their core values, improving their processes through a hands on approach, and instilling that same sense of pride in not only their product but customers as well.

Nate & Josh

Based out of Grand Rapids Michigan, MarHar snowboards has benefited from significant (controlled) growth and continually improved their production processes as well as their tools which have culminated in a high quality custom made snowboard. Their current line includes 4 different models tailored for Youth, Women, Men’s Park, and Men’s All Mountain boards. Each snowboard has custom MarHar graphics that are done in house. Rather than outsourcing the guys at MarHar dedicated time and energy to continually find ways to solve problems themselves. They own their own machines, have custom made many of their presses, and through perseverance and trial and error have fine tuned a superior snowboard. While they specialize in the physical production of the snowboards in house, they make sure that any materials that go into their board are sourced within Michigan as well. From their plastics, to the bamboo, and even their epoxy they make sure to source from local companies. They have even been fortunate enough to have a custom epoxy made specifically for them, one not used by any other manufacturer, from a Michigan company as well. This truly shows that a mutual respect between Michigan companies exists, whether they are start ups or well established, the local economy appreciates helping each other out.

Boards

The line up.

MarHar has experienced substantial growth over their several years of operations and have come a long way from starting out as a small startup company based out of basements in Grand Rapids. They now produce their product in a professional shop setting and distribute their boards both personally and through such vendors as Bill and Paul’s Sport Haus in Grand Rapids, Northern Edge Snowsports in Muskegon, Misfit Labs in Fenton, and various other sport retailers throughout Michigan and Ohio. They have grown into themselves and as of the last year are officially a self sustaining company pumping out over 120 boards this year alone. Their future goals are to maintain a controlled growth and to reach a production volume of approximately 500 boards going into their 5th year. Such a goal is impressive for any local start up company let alone that relies on a seasonal sport.

When I get in a position where I can ride daily again I think that I will be looking into one of these. Great article, great Michigan based company! I love seeing entrepreneurs in the Mitten, especially when they are in the outdoor gear biz!

  2. Matt says:

Prior to jumping on a MarHar I rode Burton for 10 years. I can honestly tell you that I’ve had more fun riding my MarHar the last 2 years than any year prior. When you get on the mountain and feel these boards you can really begin to understand how extremely detailed Nate and Josh are in their manufacturing process. If you don’t believe me just give them a call. They’ll be happy to talk your ear off about it for hours. It’s their passion. Great article!

  3. Emilee says:

Great post Tim. Is Marhar developing a line of apparel to develop their brand equity? I believe it was Nathan who noted in the video that “word of mouth” was going to be their best mode of breaking into consumer consciousness. Are they participating in any events locally? Ski swap or anything like that?

    • Kevin,

we have spent a lot of time developing our product, and working close with retail centers to sell our brand. We also spend a lot of time during the season demoing our product, being apart of snowboard/ski films, and making our presence at these events. I don’t want you to get the impression that word of mouth is our best way to breaking into the consumer consciousness, frequency is the best mode of breaking into the consumer consciousness, and what we were referring to in the Miskireport.com video was making sure that we leave our customers with a good impression, and let them know that we stand behind our product and trust the durability and capability. We are also updating our website continuously, and you can check back with the news and events portion of our site to see where we are going to be next. Some upcoming events, are Saturday December 3 from 10am-3pm @ Northern Edge Snowsports in Muskegon. December 10th from 10-2pm @ Bill and Paul’s in Grand Rapids, and December 10th we are bringing an environmental Ski film to Grand Rapids at the Wealthy St. theater title, “All I Can.” Thanks for the questions Kevin, I hope this helps, you can always call or e-mail us direct with anything else, info@marharsnowboards.com.
